Met Office reveals where snow could hit UK after heavy rain weather warnings issued

The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings across the country as it explains which areas may see snow this week.

Parts of south-west Scotland, south Wales, south-west England and Northern Ireland were hit with yellow warnings as the rains began on Tuesday morning.

Bands of heavy and persistent rain will be followed by colder air from the north, which will drop nighttime temperatures below freezing in Scotland, with the potential for some snow in higher elevations.

Met Office chief forecaster Neil Armstrong said: “The UK is facing a week of unstable weather, with frequent showers and occasional strong, gusty winds.

“There will be drier and brighter weather at times and temperatures as viewed from the north will begin to approach averages for that time of year. In Scotland we will see temperatures return to below freezing overnight, with even the possibility of some snow over the mountains on Wednesday night.”

Weather warnings will continue until midnight Tuesday (Met Office)

Around 20 to 40mm of rain is expected in parts of south-west Scotland, accompanied by winds, strengthening along exposed coastlines, with gusty winds possible leading to storm surge.

According to the Met Office, precipitation will continue to be seen as rain in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Heavy rain and southerly winds are expected in Devon and Cornwall, with showers of 20 to 40mm expected.

Meanwhile, around 30 to 50 mm of rain could fall in south Wales and 20 to 30 mm in Northern Ireland.

All yellow warnings will be lifted from midnight on Tuesday and no further warnings will be issued for the remainder of the week. The Met Office warned of traffic delays and possible flooding and disruption in affected areas.
