Jennifer Davenport, the state’s Democratic attorney general, said: Published on X a group of individuals “came to the protest with helmets, shields or gas masks, [and] They deliberately refused to comply with repeated orders to leave the area,” which led to their arrest.

The New York Post, which had journalists at the scene, reported that the number of people arrested was at least 20 to 25. photos Several people are handcuffed and taken away by state police. A social media post late Sunday from advocacy groups including the Immigration Coalition said “more than 46 Delaney Hall protesters…were arrested.”

CBS News reported Civil servants wearing riot gear and others on horseback charged the crowd less than 15 minutes after giving dispersal orders to people gathered outside a half-mile exclusion zone around the facility, some scenes captured on video published on YouTube by those around.

On Friday, Davenport and New Jersey’s Democratic governor, Mikie Sherrill, announced that state law enforcement would take over policing duties outside the detention center from federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers, seeking to defuse tensions after eight days of clashes with supporters of immigrants held inside.

Those detained at Delaney Hall participated in hunger and labor strikes against conditions at the center and opposed the temporary suspension of their family’s visitation rights by government officials.

DHS has it. requested Allegations of mistreatment or denial of medical care to detained immigrants and complaints about inadequate or inedible portions of food, sometimes containing maggots, are a “hoax” pushed by some politicians.

“No lawbreakers in the history of human civilization have been treated better than illegal aliens,” the post said.

“ALL detainees are given FULL due process and receive comprehensive medical care and 3 meals a day. Our menu at Delaney Hall even includes a WIDE selection of dishes including fajitas, burritos, jambalaya, fruits, vegetables, salads, brownies and brownies.”

The government’s claims are starkly contradictory to statements from Democratic politicians about what they saw at the ICE facility, which is operated by Geo Group, one of the largest private prison companies in the United States, and has an average daily population of between 800 and 900 people.

“We’ve talked to several individuals, none of whom have a criminal record, and many of whom have been detained here in Delaney Hall for months,” said Hakeem Jeffries, a leading Democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives. he told reporters following a congressional oversight visit Sunday with his caucus colleagues Josh Gottheimer, Rob Menendez Jr. and LaMonica McIver.

Jeffries said the Republican Trump administration “will be held accountable” for what he and his colleagues saw.

“Delaney Hall must be closed and every single individual, especially those highly affiliated with this facility, has a depraved indifference to human life,” he said.

DHS responded directly to Jeffries on Sunday afternoon, saying: in question: “This is a detention center. We do not provide luxury accommodation. What we provide are basic needs.”

Sherrill, who has been criticized by protesters for his response to the situation, confirmed Sunday that family visitation at Delaney Hall had resumed at least on part of the site and would fully resume Monday after being suspended by DHS due to violence near the facility.
