In a statement to the Daily Mail, LaBeouf’s lawyer attempted to downplay the seriousness of the charges and sentence.
“The Police and DA investigation proved exactly what Shia LaBeouf said from the very beginning, that this was nothing more than a small bar fight on Mardi Gras,” said attorney Sarah Chervinsky.
‘There is no evidence that this is related to bias or prejudice, so the state only charged these low-level misdemeanors,’ he continued. ‘Mr. LaBeouf came to court today to take responsibility for his part in what happened, and he did. He now looks forward to focusing on his family, work and new creative projects.’
District Attorney Jason Williams, who filed criminal charges against LaBeouf in late May, also released a statement shortly after the actor pleaded guilty to battery charges.
“We’re not interested in raising anyone’s profile because of who they are,” Williams said, according to the Times-Picayune. ‘Our responsibility is the same in every situation: to follow the facts, apply the law and seek accountability where warranted.
“The agreement creates meaningful legal implications and enforceable terms going forward,” Williams added. ‘If these conditions are violated, real penalties apply.’
According to the publication, Williams’ statement noted that LaBeouf agreed to many conditions as part of the plea agreement and that the district attorney’s office did not charge him with a hate crime.
