Shia LaBeouf was ordered Thursday to enroll in substance abuse treatment, enter a drug testing program and post $100,000 bail as conditions for his release from custody after the actor allegedly assaulted two men and hurled homophobic slurs at them at a New Orleans bar.
The conditions imposed on LaBeouf, 39, by New Orleans judge Simone Levine came after the Transformer movie franchise star was allowed to leave jail without having to post bail in the hours after his Feb. 17 arrest on two misdemeanor charges.
But allegations of homophobic comments attributed to LaBeouf at the time of his release have not yet entered official court records, Levine said in court Thursday.
Thereupon, Levine summoned the actor to the criminal court in New Orleans on Thursday. He appeared with prominent New Orleans criminal defense attorney Sarah Chervinsky, who was representing him, and a state judge told him to post bond to stay out of jail while the case remains unsolved.
Levine also said LaBeouf, who has long been open about his struggle with sobriety, should submit to a drug testing program and receive substance abuse treatment.
Judge on Thursday He ordered LaBeouf to undergo drug and alcohol testing. Chervinsky said the test result did not indicate his client was under the influence of alcohol or any illegal substances.
But without discussing specific findings, Levine said the test result raised concern that LaBeouf “did not take his alcohol addiction seriously.”
Chervinsky said he and his client will submit bail papers to the court shortly so that he can remain in custody until the case is concluded.
Levine, meanwhile, has rejected LaBeouf’s request to leave New Orleans, at least for now.
He is tentatively expected to appear in court again on March 19.
Thursday’s activity in the LaBeouf case comes nine days after he was arrested in connection with sworn allegations that he punched two men at the R Bar in the Marigny section of New Orleans while repeatedly insulting them with the word “faggot.”
One of the men, 34-year-old Nathan Thomas Reed, said he openly identified as gay.
The other, Jeffrey Damnit, 49, said he was wearing eye shadow and lipstick when police say he was beaten by LaBeouf around 12:45 a.m. on Feb. 17, the morning of the city’s Mardi Gras festive holiday.
He also enthusiastically celebrated Mardi Gras and called on prosecutors in Louisiana’s best-known city to charge LaBeouf under the state’s hate crimes law, which provides enhanced penalties for anyone who victimizes another person on an “actual or perceived” basis based on certain categories, such as sex or gender.
New Orleans District Attorney Jason Williams’ office has not indicated whether it would do so.
Court documents allege that on the day of his arrest, LaBeouf became increasingly aggressive at the R Bar, a short walk from New Orleans’ famous French Quarter.
The documents alleged LaBeouf tried to punch a bar manager who was tasked with firing him. LaBeouf allegedly punched Damnit, who was helping the bar manager, in the upper body after he was escorted out.
LaBeouf then returned and punched Reed in the nose, but the victim said he didn’t want to fight, officers allege.
Bystanders held LaBeouf to the ground until police and paramedics arrived, officers said.
Officers reported that LaBeouf allegedly called Damnit, whose last name is Klein, and Reed a “faggot” multiple times. In a mobile phone video seen by the Guardian, LaBeouf appears to specifically target the insult at Damnit.
LaBeouf was hospitalized, released, jailed on misdemeanor charges, and soon released from custody on his own recognizance.
Within hours, she was seen having fun on Bourbon Street, the hotspot for Mardi Gras parties. At one point, he had Mardi Gras beads around his neck and was dancing around with prison paperwork in his mouth.
Days later, LaBeouf was recorded and photographed dancing and locking lips with an unidentified brunette at a New Orleans nightclub, gossip source TMZ said. reported.
The alumnus of Disney’s show Even Stevens has had previous contact with the criminal court system. LaBeouf was arrested in New York in 2014 for allegations that he disrupted a Broadway show. accused Insulting a police officer with the homophobic slur “faggot”.
