Shias Reiterate MLC Nomination Under Guv Quota

Hyderabad: Shia leaders reiterated their demand for appointment of a qualified representative for the Legislative Council under the Governor’s quota after the Telangana High Court directed the state government to reconsider their demands.

Speaking to media persons on Sunday, Shia Civil Social Justice Council’s national general secretary, Muhammad Ali Hyder, said that despite repeated representations from both the Telangana High Court and the Supreme Court and prior judicial directions, the state has not acted on the recommendations ensuring participation of Shiites in governance and minority institutions.

He said the Supreme Court in its order dated May 26 had given freedom to the petitioners to file petitions under Article 226 and request the Supreme Court to resolve the issue. The High Court’s order in the writ petition dated December 11 reaffirmed the concerns and found that the petitioners had made it clear that they had not complied with the earlier directions.

“These representations have been repeatedly rejected or ignored without meaningful justification. The Supreme Court has now ruled that such mechanical rejection violates the constitutional principles of justice, equality, transparency and non-arbitrariness,” Ali Hyder said.

Legal counsel VR Mannepalli explained that following the earlier orders, the Supreme Court had categorically conveyed the order to the government to take into consideration the name of Shia Council representative Muhammad Ali Hyder. He said there were 10 to 12 thousand Shiites in the province and an educated representative of the community could be the best option to bring their issues to the Council.
