Ship attacked near Strait of Hormuz as Iran says it is reviewing US response to 14-point proposal to end war

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is expected to travel to Italy this week to meet with Pope Leo, a Vatican source said, after President Donald Trump’s attacks on the pope sparked criticism across the political spectrum.

The meeting, the first known face-to-face meeting between Leo and a U.S. cabinet official in nearly a year, is expected to take place on Thursday, a senior source familiar with the pope’s plans said.

The pope, who is American, has emerged in recent weeks as an outspoken critic of the US-Israeli-led war with Iran, after previously criticizing the Trump administration’s hardline anti-immigration policies.

Trump harshly criticized Leo on social media several times in April, at one point calling the pope “terrible” in attacks that received widespread attention while Leo was on a four-country tour of Africa.
