Alabama woman Ella Cook killed in Brown University shooting in Providence

An Alabama woman was among two students killed in Saturday’s shooting at Brown University, according to the church.

The Cathedral Church of Advent in Birmingham said congregation member Ella Cook was killed when a gunman opened fire on a classroom at the college campus in Providence, Rhode Island.

“Some of you haven’t heard, most of you have… [about] “Tragically, one of our parishioners, Ella Cook, was one of those killed yesterday,” Pastor Craig Smalley said in a video of the church’s Sunday service.

Smalley said Cook “encouraged and lifted”[ed] lift up those around you.”

“And those of you who knew him, those of you who knew him, he was an incredible down-to-earth, loyal, bright light… He was an incredible light at Brown University, in that particular place, too.”

Cook was a sophomore in college. He was also vice president of the Brown University College Republicans.

College Republicans of America said the school was “devastated” following Cook’s death.

“Ella was known for being brave, courageous, and kind-hearted while serving her department and her classmates,” the group said in a statement. he said. “Our prayers are with his family, our Brown CRs, and the entire campus recovering from this tragedy.”

PERSON RELATED TO THE CONFLICT AT BROWN UNIVERSITY WAS RELEASED

The attack occurred around 4 p.m. Saturday in a classroom in the Barus and Holley engineering building. In the incident, 2 students died and 9 students were injured. Authorities did not immediately release their identities as they attempted to notify their families.

Police announced early Sunday morning that a person of interest had been detained, but later that night authorities said he would be released.

Authorities continue their search for the killer. Police said surveillance video showing a man dressed all in black was still the “most useful” video in tracking down the gunman.
