Siberian Painted Storks Arrive In Khammam After 4 Years

What are you doing? After a gap of four years, thousands of Siberian painted storks (red-legged storks) were spotted in Chanthapally in Khammam district. These birds come to Khammam for the breeding season, which lasts from January to August. They built their nests on tamarind and mesquite trees near a water source in the village.

Seeing the Siberian birds, the villagers were overjoyed as they believed that the arrival of such birds would mean good rains and harvest.

Authorities also asked the villagers to take measures to protect the Siberian painted storks that migrate to the village.

District forest officer Siddharth Vikram Singh, in an advisory, asked tourists and people who come to watch migratory Siberian painted storks not to throw stones at them and drive them out of their nests. He said people should not cry loudly or make loud noises. Silence should be maintained by observers in the venue.

He asked citizens to inform the forest department officials if an injured bird is found.

“It was everyone’s responsibility, especially the villagers of Chanthapally, to protect the Siberian painted storks, which migrated to the region by traveling thousands of kilometers,” the forest officer said.
