Sinkhole shuts down runway at New York airport

A pothole closed one of the runways at New York’s LaGuardia airport, leading to cancellations, delays and ongoing emergency repairs.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which manages airports in the New York City area, said at 11 a.m. that officials were conducting a daily inspection of LaGuardia’s airspace after crews detected a pothole.

The official warned that “travelers should expect delays and cancellations, particularly due to thunderstorms expected later today.”

The Federal Aviation Administration said it was slowing flights to LaGuardia Airport due to weather conditions and potholes.

At LaGuardia, nearly 200 flights, or 17 percent of departures and arrivals, were canceled and 190 flights were delayed, according to flight tracking site FlightAware.

Delta Air Lines is LaGuardia’s largest carrier, operating about 40 percent of flights.
