Sinkhole shuts runway at LaGuardia Airport, delaying flights

A pothole at New York’s LaGuardia Airport closed the runway on Wednesday and will delay flights, local officials said.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said it conducted a daily inspection of the airport early Wednesday and “crews detected a pothole near Runway 4/22.”
“The runway was closed immediately and emergency construction and engineering teams are on site to determine the cause and complete any necessary repairs as quickly and safely as possible.” Port Authority he said in a statement.
He said travelers should expect delays and cancellations, and thunderstorms were also expected on Wednesday. Air traffic controllers routinely slow flights or halt takeoffs altogether during bad weather conditions.
The weather conditions are currently causing delays to flights at three major airports serving the New York City area and much of New Jersey and the Washington, D.C., area, the FAA said.
The outages come ahead of the busy Memorial Day travel period, and runway closures are adding to the headaches at one of the nation’s most congested airports.
