Skyhooks guitarist Bob Starkie dies aged 73

Skyhooks, a quintet, were early favorites on the Melbourne music TV series countdownThey pair their quirky, location-based songs with flashy stage outfits.

Starkie joined the band in August 1973, replacing his brother Peter, who had helped found the band. Peter died in 2020 at the age of 72 after falling down a flight of stairs.

Young Starkie proved to be the perfect foil to the band’s lead guitarist, Red Symons, with his dueling solos at the halfway point. You only like me because I’m good in bed a particular highlight of their six-string partnership.

The band’s lead singer, Shirley Strachan, died during a solo helicopter flight in Queensland in 2001, at the age of 49.
