Nobel Peace Prize 2025: Can Trump’s Claims Of Ending Eight Wars Win Him Glory? | World News

Washington: The Norwegian Nobel Committee will announce the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize today (October 10). One person dominates speculation. US President Donald Trump has claimed a central role in ending seven wars and positioned himself as a mediator in the eighth war.

Trump’s announcement regarding Israel-Hamas ceasefire talks follows the unveiling of the 20-point peace plan last week. He claims that this plan paved the way for a ceasefire.

“Everyone says I should get the Nobel Peace Prize. I’ve ended seven wars. No president or prime minister has done anything close to that,” he told the United Nations General Assembly in September.

The conflicts he mentions include Cambodia and Thailand, Kosovo and Serbia, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda, India and Pakistan, Israel and Iran, Egypt and Ethiopia, Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Some ceasefires involve his direct participation, others are controversial. Analysts acknowledge that in some cases parties credit him for his mediation efforts.

Trump claims the Gaza ceasefire deserves recognition. The deadly two-year war between Israel and Hamas has moved towards a solution following pressure on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Critics underline that US military support for Israel was critical during the war.

In June, Trump brokered a ceasefire between Iran and Israel after Israel attacked Iran’s nuclear facilities. While the US ordered an attack on Iran’s three nuclear facilities, Tehran retaliated by striking the largest US military base in the Middle East in Qatar.

The US president also claims that he helped broker a ceasefire between India and Pakistan in May following airstrikes on each other’s bases. Pakistan appreciated the intervention, but India did not accept the US role.

Cambodia and Thailand reached a ceasefire in August after Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim coordinated with Chinese negotiators. Cambodia expressed its gratitude.

Kosovo and Serbia signed an agreement under Trump in 2020. Tensions remain, but a full-scale war has not broken out since Trump’s return to office.

Trump’s peace efforts include an agreement reached between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo in June. The ceasefire is fragile. Egypt and Ethiopia had no active war, but the US president claims to have played a role in easing tensions over the Nile dam dispute.

In August, Trump oversaw a peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan. He later claimed in an interview that he was mediating between Azerbaijan and Albania, misidentifying the countries.

It will not be a surprise if President Trump is deemed worthy of the peace prize this year, even though he has not yet made a significant enough contribution to peace to win the award. While efforts to end the war in Gaza deserve praise, it is too early to tell whether the peace proposal will be implemented and lead to lasting peace.

Trump compares his foreign policy record to former US President Barack Obama, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009. “If my name was Obama, the Nobel Prize would be given to me within 10 seconds,” he said.

He is also a military actor. He ordered attacks on Iran, Somalia, Yemen and the Caribbean. He threatened to annex Greenland, Canada and the Panama Canal.

The Nobel Peace Prize aims to honor work done for peace and brotherhood among nations. Past winners are a sign of resilience.

Political scientist and former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger won in 1973 despite bombing campaigns in Cambodia. Shimon Peres shared the prize in 1994 but had a military background in the Suez War. Aung San Suu Kyi won in 1991 and later faced criticism over the Rohingya crisis. Barack Obama’s 2009 award faced scrutiny for being premature.

Trump’s candidacy is supported by international leaders. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu nominated him in July. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet supported him in August. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev also nominated him as a joint candidate.

Steve Witkoff called Trump the “single best candidate” for the award in the United States. U.S. Representative Buddy Carter and Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla also endorsed him.

Nominations after July 31 will be valid for 2026. Pakistan nominates Trump for next year. The Norwegian Nobel Committee did not comment on Trump’s candidacy.

The US president warned of the consequences of not winning. “This would be a huge insult to America. They’re going to give this to a guy who did nothing… They’re going to give this to a guy who wrote a book about the mind of Donald Trump,” he said.

The Norwegian government stated that this did not affect the award. Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eid said: “This is entirely in the hands of the Nobel Committee. It is important to remember that it is an independent committee.”

The 2025 Nobel Peace Prize will push the boundaries of recognition and debate. Trump claims to have played a historic role in ending wars. Experts say his record should be examined. The world will watch on October 10.
