Maha opens Babli gates to release water into Godavari

Nizamabad: The gates of the Babli project near Dharmabad in Nanded, Maharashtra, were removed on Tuesday and left water to the Godavari River. The release was carried out in the presence of representatives of the Central Water Commission (CWC) as well as irrigation officials from TaLangana and Maharashtra.

According to the Directive of the Supreme Court, the Maharashtra government opens its Babli doors every year on 1 July and keeps it open until 28 October to ensure the ongoing flow in Godavari between Maharashtra and TaLangana.

The released water is expected to reach Sriram Sagar Project (SRSP) within 24 hours. Authorities warned the inhabitants along the river coast in Nizamabad and Nirmal regions. The Temple Basar town between Babli Dam and SRSP lies during this stretch. In the last summer, Godavari’s flow had decreased significantly.

When the doors are removed, the increasing flow will meet both people and livestock drinking water needs in Nizamabad and Nirmal. While talking Deccan ChronicleSRSP Supervision Engineer T. Srinivas Rao Gupta said that 0.35 TMC FT water was released from the Babli project and that the flow of Godavari would rise further.
