The UK is bracing for 40 hours of persistent snowfall next week as the weather turns colder once again. New data from forecaster WXCharts shows the weather conditions are spreading across the UK, engulfing towns and cities.
Weather maps show a large band of snow coming from the South West on January 26, covering large parts of central and northern England as well as Scotland. The weather then improves throughout the day and remains in place for the next two days before dissipating towards the end of the month. It will be rainy across much of Britain next week, with weather maps showing yellow and orange stripes lurking across much of the country.
The snow will be heaviest in Scotland, with the Highlands expected to see up to 70cm fall.
In England, Yorkshire will experience a heavy band of snow stretching from Yorkshire to the Midlands, with cities such as Leeds expected to see around 30cm of snow.
Separately, the Met Office’s forecast for Sunday to Tuesday warned of potential snow risk.
The following statements were made in the statement: “Everywhere is unstable due to rain bands moving north and east across the country.
“It is gradually getting colder from the northeast and the risk of snow is increasing, especially in the northern hills.”
The Met Office frequently warns about the difficulty of predicting snowfall more than a few days in advance.
The statement said: “In many temperate countries such as England, a small amount of snow can cause all kinds of disruption.
“But this can also be very difficult to predict. There are many factors that play a role in determining whether rain or snow will fall from the sky, such as altitude, distance from the coast and rainfall intensity.”
The Met office added: “While there remains uncertainty about the start of next week, there is the possibility of winter danger at times, particularly in the north and east, with the possibility of snow for some.
“For cold weather with an eastern influence, particularly those in the northeast, there is potential for snowfall accumulation in some places but it is too early to give exact details.”
