Perth Lynx lose star Wilson in huge WNBL blow

Perth Lynx’s hopes of ending their 34-year title drought have been dealt a major blow after star guard Ally Wilson announced she would not return to the WNBL club.
Wilson, who signed a training camp deal with the Washington Mystics, is currently pursuing her WNBA dream in the United States.
The 32-year-old starred during her two-season stint at Washington, being named to the WNBL All-Star First Team on both occasions and helping Perth reach the 2025/26 grand final.
Wilson averaged 14.2 points, 4.8 assists and 4.7 rebounds per game last season and wore a face mask for most of the season to protect his broken nose.
The loss of Wilson will leave a huge void for the Lynx as they look to make amends for last season’s grand final defeat to Townsville Fire and win their first title since 1992.
“Ally has been an outstanding representative of the Perth Lynx over the last two seasons,” said Lynx general manager Chris Earl.
“His competitiveness and connection with our fans have made a lasting impact on our program.
“We are grateful for everything she has brought to the club and wish her all the best in the near future, her time with the Washington Mystics in the WNBA, and the next chapter of her career.”
Geelong Venom’s Shyla Heal has told the club she will invoke a European ban, meaning she will not return next season.
Heal, the daughter of NBL legend Shane, averaged 15.75 points and 3.6 assists last season.
Geelong also lost forward Jaz Shelley, who signed a two-year contract with the Sydney Flames.
Shelley led the league in steals last season (2.57 per game) and also averaged 12.9 points, 4.1 assists and 3.7 rebounds per game.
