USA Weather: A powerful winter storm ripped through parts of the United States from Friday evening into Saturday, bringing heavy snowfall, disrupting holiday travel and knocking out power to thousands.

The winter storm hit the Northeast and Great Lakes regions of the United States.

More than 5,580 flights within, within or out of the country were delayed and at least 860 flights were canceled as of 2pm Eastern Time on Saturday, according to flight tracking service FlightAware, IANS reported, citing Xinhua news agency.

Flight functions were affected due to severe weather conditions; Among those hardest hit are the three major airports in the New York metropolitan area.

The Federal Aviation Administration reportedly estimated that flights into New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport were delayed by an average of two hours on Saturday morning.

Winter storm warnings cover areas from New York to Philadelphia, and travelers and residents are warned to be careful due to the storm.

The powerful storm arrives ahead of the busiest travel day of the holiday season, with 2.86 million passengers expected to fly in on Sunday, according to Transportation Security Administration data.

Power Outage in the USA

More than 30,000 homes and businesses were left without power in the US state of Michigan on Saturday morning due to ice on trees and power lines.

Ahead of the storm, New York and New Jersey officials declared states of emergency and advised residents to follow safety protocols while informing travelers about weather conditions and road closures.
