The centuries-old history of destruction and reconstruction of the Somnath temple reflects the resilience of India’s deep-rooted civilizational values. Sanatana DharmaUnion Home Minister Amit Shah, in his statement on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, described the mausoleum as a symbol of the enduring beliefs and traditions of the nation.

Speaking at a public program in Mansa town of Gandhinagar district, Mr. Shah said that the historical invaders who tried to raze the shrine have disappeared over time, while the temple continues to stand in the same coastal area in Gir Somnath district as a symbol of enduring faith.

Addressing the inauguration of Somnath Swabhiman Parv by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, January 11, 2026, Mr. Shah said the year-long celebration marks the millennium since Mahmud of Ghazni’s attack on the temple in 1026. He noted that although the mausoleum was destroyed many times, it continued to be rebuilt and remains an important monument of faith today.

The Home Minister said that a major Somnath corridor has also been developed under the leadership of the Prime Minister, strengthening the historical and cultural significance of this area. According to him, the temple represents the resilience of Indian civilization and the continuity of its traditions.

Mr. Shah said Somnath Swabhiman Parv will be observed across the country through various programs aimed at deepening public awareness of India’s spiritual and cultural heritage.

Tracing the history of the temple, he said that Somnath was subjected to repeated attacks by various invaders over the centuries but was rebuilt each time, reflecting what he called the contrast between the forces of destruction and the spirit of creation.

He also recalled the role played by leaders such as Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, KM Munshi, Maharaja of Jamnagar and former President Rajendra Prasad in rebuilding the temple after Independence, describing their efforts as an assertion of national self-respect.

During the event, Mr. Shah inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of development projects worth ₹267 crore, including a sports complex in his hometown Mansa. He said additional facilities would be added to the complex through ₹ 15 crore to be mobilized through corporate social responsibility funds and urged local representatives to ensure best use of youth in the area.
