Son shoots sleeping mother 11 times after she told him to go to bed | US | News

A 20-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly shooting his mother 11 times while she slept in the family home. Four members of the family, including a child, were sleeping during the terrible incident.

Kevin Marin of Santa Teresa, Texas, is currently facing aggravated battery and attempted murder charges following his arrest on Monday, October 13.

That day, Sunland Park police responded to reports of a shooting at a residence on Ashwood Drive. Investigators discovered Marin’s mother bleeding heavily in the hallway outside her son’s bedroom.

He was immediately taken to Transmountain Hospital in El Paso and later transferred to University Medical Center; where doctors confirmed he had sustained 11 gunshot wounds. A day later, it was stated that his condition was critical and the patient was placed on life support.

Marin is currently being held in the Doña Ana County Detention Center, according to Law and Crime, and prosecutors are pushing to have him held without bail under New Mexico’s pretrial detention statute.

Local news outlet KTSM had previously reported that around 3 a.m. Monday, Sunland Park police officers discovered an active crime scene at a home in the 5000 block of Ashwood Drive in Santa Teresa.

Marin’s brother, who was at home, also reported hearing Marin screaming late at night. Their mother, who said she told Marin to go to sleep, expressed the same sentiment, saying he was “acting crazy,” according to court documents.

The brother explained that their mother took Marin to her bedroom and stayed with her. Hours later, the house became a crime scene.

The defendant’s brother was awakened by gunshots in his bedroom at around 03:00 in the morning, where he found his mother wounded with 11 bullets. He quickly rushed his seriously injured mother to the hospital.

When we returned home, police reportedly found multiple bullet casings from a semi-automatic rifle/carbine. Court documents state that those casings were found in Marin’s bedroom, two bullet holes were found on the west-facing exterior of the home, and a bloody shoe print with blood droplets was found under a Jeep Wrangler parked in the driveway.

Another woman who was present at the time of the attack returned home after the victim was hospitalized to find Marin casually sitting on the living room couch, local NBC affiliate KTSM reported.

Marin was arrested and charged later the same day.

Police records show the 20-year-old has a criminal history stemming from his arrest on Nov. 16, 2023, for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance.

After initially being released on bail, he was rearrested and jailed in December 2023 on a $150,000 bail. He was later released in March last year after paying a split bail, in which part of the sum was secured by a private bail bondsman.

The court date for these 2023 charges for aggravated assault is set for February 6, 2026.
