Sourav Ganguly makes police complaint over defamatory posts on social media

Former India cricket captain and former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly filed a police complaint on Monday, June 15, 2026, alleging that a Facebook page with millions of followers had posted defamatory and misleading content aimed at tarnishing his reputation.

Claiming that the posts were spread from a page titled “Sourav Ganguly Fans”, which describes itself as an unofficial fan page, he demanded action against those running this page.

In his complaint to the Thakurpukur Police Station, Mr. Ganguly alleged that posts “aimed at damaging my reputation and creating a negative impression in the public” were constantly being shared.

The former cricketer said the page, which has more than 3.6 million followers, had caused serious damage to his personal and professional image through the dissemination of allegedly fake and damaging material.

“As a public figure, I understand that opinions and criticism are part of public life; however, disseminating misleading, defamatory and damaging content with the intention of damaging my reputation is unacceptable and requires appropriate legal action,” Mr. Ganguly said in his complaint.

He called on the police to identify the person or group operating the page and take action against them in accordance with the relevant legal provisions.

“Therefore, I request you to register my complaint against the persons/groups operating this page and take necessary action as per relevant laws,” Mr. Ganguly wrote in his complaint.

The former left-hander also requested urgent intervention to prevent further spread of such content on social media platforms.

Demanding a thorough investigation, he said authorities should investigate the matter and “immediately take necessary measures to prevent further misuse of social media platforms that would damage my reputation.”

A senior police officer confirmed receiving Mr Ganguly’s complaint and said the matter was under investigation.

One of India’s most famous cricketers, Mr. Ganguly captained the national team between 2000 and 2005 and later served as president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). He is currently the president of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB).
