South Carolina teacher charged after allegedly trying to run over baby’s father

A woman who won the “Teacher of the Year” award in South Carolina has been charged with allegedly trying to run over the father of her baby in a Walmart parking lot.

According to Live5News, Summerville police responded to St. Louis in Charleston, South Carolina. Sade Delesia Nacheyle Nelson, the 2025 “Teacher of the Year” at St. John High School, said Nelson was accused of attacking her child’s father and his girlfriend during a custody exchange on Oct. 18.

Nelson, 37, allegedly punched the man and his girlfriend before hitting her with his car.

Surveillance video allegedly shows Nelson speeding toward her child’s father, who had to move out of the way to avoid being hit by the vehicle.

Nelson faces charges of third-degree assault and battery, highly aggravated domestic violence, unlawfully endangering or harming a child or willful abandonment of a child, according to an incident report.

Police records show the man told officers Nelson opened the passenger door of his car and his son began punching him repeatedly, the Daily Mail reported.

He said he fell out of the car while trying to escape from his punches.

Nelson claimed to police that the man attacked her and her sons after opening the car door.

The Charleston County School District said Nelson has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
