Minister of Internal Affairs Ali Yerlikaya said that 3 empty buildings and a two-storey store collapsed in Sındırgı. Officials said these buildings were already weakened by the strong tremor that hit the area last August.

Balıkesir Governor İsmail Ustaoğlu said that 22 people were injured. Injuries were mostly minor; It was caused by falls and fear as people left their homes due to the earthquake.

Sındırgı district official Doğukan Koyuncu stated that no deaths were reported in the initial evaluations, but the evaluation process of the authorities continues.

The population takes shelter with the rains

Following the first earthquake, the region experienced numerous aftershocks, causing widespread fear among the public. Habertürk television reported that the majority of residents refused to return to their homes and stayed outside.

After the rain started, Governor Ustaoğlu declared mosques, schools and gyms in the region as temporary shelters for citizens who feared that aftershocks would continue.

The Balıkesir region is particularly vulnerable as it was hit by another 6.1 magnitude earthquake last August, which killed one person and caused many injuries.

Türkiye’s Tectonic Sensitivity

Türkiye is located on major fault lines and is among the most risky countries in the world in terms of earthquakes. The country is still trying to rebuild after a devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake in 2023 that killed more than 53,000 people in 11 provinces in the south and southeast and nearly 6,000 in northern Syria. This disaster destroyed or severely damaged hundreds of thousands of structures.
