Spain cancelled flights warning as Brits face holiday chaos | World | News

This week’s scorching heatwave has caused travel chaos for many as airports were hit by extreme weather conditions. Rising temperatures and overnight storms have caused disruptions to and from airports across the UK.

Edinburgh Airport diverted and canceled flights due to the storm affecting Scotland. In the early hours of Friday morning, the Met Office recorded thousands of lightning strikes as storms moved across the country.

While Western and Central Europe were enjoying the scorching heat, France, Spain, Italy, Belgium and Germany also experienced airport delays.

The Majorca Daily Bulletin reported that more than 2,000 flights were disrupted across Europe this month due to storms, congested airspace and bottlenecks at major airports.

New research from AirAdvisor shows that the worst-hit routes for UK travelers right now are Spanish routes. Overall delay rates in Palma, Mallorca, more than doubled from 3.66% to 7.60%.

Delays at Alicante Elche airport almost tripled, from 4.39 percent to 11.73 percent; This means roughly one in nine departures are delayed by at least an hour. The average wait time for an already delayed flight is 124 minutes.

The Majorca Daily Bulletin reported that the deaths were attributed to rising temperatures as Spain grapples with the first heatwave of the year, which began last Sunday and is now easing.

Central and northern regions bear the brunt of extreme conditions. On Wednesday, June 24, the highest excess mortality rate was recorded (96), accounting for almost half of the deaths.
