Thomas Markle has broken his silence following the heartbreaking “life or death” surgery in which the 81-year-old man chose to save his life by losing his leg in emergency surgery late last year. Speaking from his new home in the Philippines, Meghan’s estranged father opened up about his recovery after losing his leg in early December.

Following a grueling three-hour “life or death” surgery that resulted in the loss of a leg and its amputation, Meghan Markle’s father is sharing an update on her recovery at her new home in the Philippines.

Despite the ongoing royal dispute and conflicting reports of “desperate” phone calls and letters sent, Mr Markle says he is “slowly adjusting” and remains hopeful of reconciliation with his daughter and grandchildren he has never met.

The grueling three-hour procedure was the latest in a series of medical tragedies for Mr Markle, who has previously suffered two heart attacks and a debilitating stroke.

Despite being in great pain in recent months, Mr Markle celebrated the progress he has made by sharing lunch with hospital staff.

“I am very well taken care of and I am grateful for all the wonderful care I receive,” she said. Mail on Sunday. “I’m slowly getting used to it and doing lots of physiotherapy. I feel very happy and I’m making good progress. I still have a long way to go but I’m trying to get used to my new conditions.”

Despite initial claims that Meghan had not contacted her father about her leg surgery, it has now been revealed that she called local hospitals in a desperate attempt to find out more details about her estranged father’s health. His spokesman later confirmed that he had “reached out” by sending a letter to his father. But the mystery deepened when Mr Markle claimed he was “confused” by reports that his youngest child was trying to contact him.

His spokesman later issued a harsh statement in an attempt to clarify the conflicting reports. The letter said: “Despite her efforts over the past few days it has been extremely difficult for the Duchess to contact her father privately. With the support of reliable and trustworthy contacts, his correspondence is now safely in her hands.”

Although Mr. Markle and Meghan’s mother, Doria, separated when Meghan was just three, Meghan always had a close relationship with her father while growing up in California. She lived with Mr. Markle from age 11 to 18 while her mother was traveling and even described him as “thoughtful, inspiring, hard-working” in a 2014 social media post.

But her mother, Doria, condemned her ex for his actions of staging the photos and speaking to the press, saying in the Sussex documentary that she was “absolutely stunned” by his behaviour, adding “that’s not what you do as a parent. That’s not parenting”.

Mr. Markle did not remain silent about his daughter in the years that followed and participated in interviews about her several times. He described their exit from royal life as “the stupidest thing they could have ever done” and due to the estrangement he never met his grandchildren, Prince Archie, six, and Princess Lilibet, four.

But despite the ongoing turmoil, Mr Markle said he would love his daughter forever. Appearing on Good Morning Britain in September, she claimed: “I’m always here for him, I love him, I’ll love him forever. I want him to reach out to me, let me see my grandchildren and let me have some peace. It’s been five years.”
