A major Spanish airport used by millions of passengers every year has made a major announcement after all flights were canceled for more than a month.
Santiago de Compostela Airport was closed on April 23 to allow extensive runway renovations to take place.
At the time of the closure, Spanish airport operator Aena issued a statement confirming that all air traffic would be suspended during the works.
The following statements were made in the statement: “Santiago-Rosalía de Castro Airport will be closed between April 23 and May 27, 2026 due to runway renovation works.
“During this period, the airport will be closed to all traffic and there will be no takeoffs and landings.
“If you have questions regarding your flight status, schedule changes, or possible rebooking, we encourage you to contact your airline.”
Which UK flights are affected by the closure of Santiago de Compostela Airport?
The airport, which will reopen from May 27, is a popular transit point for British tourists visiting Santiago de Compostela and the wider Galicia region, The Sun reports.
Direct UK services operated by Ryanair, Vueling, British Airways and Iberia were all affected during the closure.
Under normal operations, around 30 weekly flights connect the airport with London Stansted, London Gatwick and London Heathrow, with journey times being just over two hours.
The closure also affected international travelers outside the UK; Approximately 3.6 million passengers use the airport annually.
In total, the airport serves 23 destinations through nine airlines.
Why did Ryanair reduce flights to Santiago de Compostela?
Last year Ryanair closed its base at Santiago de Compostela Airport as part of wider cuts across Spain.
The airline said the decision was part of plans to remove 1.2 million seats due to rising airport fees.
Other Spanish destinations affected by Ryanair’s discounts included Jerez, Vigo and Valladolid.
Despite the disruptions, Ryanair continues to operate flights to Santiago de Compostela three times a week on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays, with fares previously advertised starting from £15.99.
