Sreeleela Under Social Media Scanner Amid Rising Competition in Tollywood

Following the box office success of Lenin, actress Sreeleela found herself at the center of intense social media scrutiny. The young actor was initially chosen as the hero of the film and even appeared in the teaser, but later withdrew from the cast due to date issues. The role eventually went to Bhagyashri Borse, whose performance received critical acclaim from audiences and critics alike.

Since then, social media has been flooded with comparisons between the two actresses, with many users praising the makers for casting Bhagyashri. Social media users collectively commented, “Bhagyashri Borse is the perfect combination of beauty and talent. She has emerged as the new craze of Tollywood and has a bright future ahead of her.”

Sreeleela nevertheless became the target of online trolling. While many continued to appreciate her exceptional dancing skills and screen presence, some questioned her script choice and acting performances. Apart from Bhagavanth Kesari, many of his recent films failed to make an impact at the box office, leading to criticism that he signed up too many projects at the peak of his popularity.

“Heroes have a relatively short shelf life in the industry and are often blamed for failures regardless of the size of their roles,” says a producer. “Sreeleela has starred in films like Extra Ordinary Man and Ustaad Bhagat Singh and several other underperforming films and unfortunately the industry tends to celebrate success while quickly associating actors with failures.”

Competition among young players has also intensified. Buoyed by the success of Lucky Baskhar and Anaganaga Oka Roju, Meenakshi Chaudhary, Tamil star Suriya, Mamitha Baiju and Kayadu Lohar, the Telugu film Viswanath and Sons, along with Srinidhi Shetty, has been bagging big ticket Telugu projects and is steadily climbing the ladder of success.

Director Hemanth Madhukar believes that such competition is natural and healthy. “Every actress has to face competition. There are many talented young heroines who are making a mark in Tollywood. But an actress who has had a few flops can always bounce back with one solid hit,” she says.

She also feels that heroines are unfairly targeted when films fail. “In most commercial films, the hero is centre-stage, but when a film underperforms, fans often blame the hero. This is quite unfortunate,” he adds.

Meanwhile, Rashmika Mandanna continues to dominate the Tollywood landscape with a string of successful films and is reportedly charging over Rs 5 million per film. While Sreeleela and many of her contemporaries are said to be around Rs 2 crore, actresses like Shruti Haasan and Mrunal Thakur are reportedly commanding Rs 3 crore.

Hemanth Madhukar concludes, “Remuneration is directly linked to box office success. This is the reality of the Telugu film industry. A major success can completely change the career trajectory of an actress.”
