Sriramsagar, Nizamsagar Project Gates Lifted Due To Heavy Inflows

NIZAMABAD: Heavy water flow in Godavari River and its tributary Manjeera has affected both Sriramsagar and Nizamsagar projects. Irrigation authorities removed the gates of both projects to release water downstream and alerted villages along the river banks. The irrigation department is closely monitoring the flood situation in coordination with neighboring Maharashtra authorities.

Instant inflows into Sriramsagar Project reached 1,09,454 cusecs and the same outflow was recorded on Thursday as well. While 1,00,000 cusecs of water were released by opening 26 gates, an additional 8,000 cusecs of water were released through escape gates and 650 cusecs from Saraswathi canal. No water was released into Kakatiya, Laxmi or flood flow channels. Under the Bhagiratha Mission, 231 cusecs were diverted and 573 cusecs were lost due to evaporation.

No water was released under the Alisagar and Gutpa Lift Irrigation Schemes. The water level in Nizamsagar Project has reached the full reservoir level of 1,405.00 feet, holding 17,802 TMC ft of water. Inflows reached 20,514 cusecs on Thursday and authorities released excess water by opening three gates. Due to the heavy flow, people living along the Manjeera River in Kamareddy and Nizamabad districts were alerted.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Nizamsagar project deputy executive engineer Saaketh said that water flow in Manjeera River has increased due to increased water flow from Singur reservoir which is now reaching Nizamsagar. “Residents living downstream of Manjeera River in both districts have been alerted. Following instructions from senior officials, we have released water downstream,” he said, adding that flood conditions in the Nizamsagar project area are likely to continue till October-end.
