Beijing: India recently carried out the second flight attempt of the long-range ballistic missile AGNI-5 and strengthened its strategic capabilities. The missile, which has a range of more than 5,000 kilometers, achieves important regional targets, including Beijing and Pakistan. Designed to carry nuclear war titles, AGNI-5 reinforces India’s position in the strategic deterrence environment.

The test took place shortly before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to China. Government officials referred to the hearing routinely. However, the abilities shown by AGNI-5 are of significant strategic importance.

MIRV technology improves strike skills

The latest test follows the Mission Divyastra in March 2024 and points to the integration of independently targeted re-entry (MIRV) technology with AGNI-5.

This progress allows a single missile to carry and distribute multiple war heads that can be hit by separate goals. The deployment of MIRV technology expands India’s aggressive access and flexibility.

India’s combining MIRV technology points to a large milestone in the defense program. With an estimated 180 nuclear war title, India joins a certain group of countries that can use MIRV equipped systems.

On the other hand, China’s arsenal is believed to be about 600 war titles that position both countries to a dynamic regional balance.

Comprehensive missile test in intervals

In addition to AGNI-5, India recently tested several other strategic systems such as PrithVi-2, AGNI-1, AGNI-2, AGNI-3 and Supersonic Cruise missile. Each of these platforms covers different operational intervals by creating a layered and versatile missile force:

  • PrithVi-2: Approximately 350 kilometers range
  • AGNI-1: December up to 700 kilometers
  • AGNI-2: approximately 2,000 kilometers of range
  • Agni-3: can reach 3,000 kilometers
  • Brahmos: It is known for its sensitivity and effectiveness in various distribution scenarios

These systems together create a comprehensive strike capability and increase India’s ability to respond to the spectrum of potential threats.

Developments in Chinese missile defense

The people of the People’s Liberation (PLA) continue to invest in missile defense modernization. Remarkable systems include HQ-19 and DN-3 designed to cut ballistic missiles during moderate course orbits.

The HQ-19 system functions in a similar role to the American Thaad system and can be effective against medium-range missile threats.

DN-3 uses an approach to a stroke that targets objects in space or extended intervals.

Atmospheric defense systems such as HQ-9 and HQ-9B provide scope against airplanes, cruise missiles and limited ballistic threats.

Although these systems go through multiple tests, performance assessments show changing levels of reliability. Supersonic systems such as Brahmos continue to create significant difficulties in intervention efforts.

On the other hand, the effectiveness of PLA systems against intercontinental ballistic missiles, including AGNI-5, has not been proved.

The complexity introduced with speed, maneuverability

The high speed of the AGNI-5 complicates intervention attempts when combined with the ability to perform advanced orbit maneuvers. Effective monitoring and targeting window is significantly reduced.

Currently, China’s early warning infrastructure, including radar and satellite networks, has been developed, but has not survived full operational ability.

AGNI-6 and Brahmos NG

India actively advances new generation strategic systems. Currently developed, the AGNI-6 missile is expected to have a range of 8,000 to 10,000 kilometers and carry MIRV loads.

Focusing on speed, sensitivity and operational versatility, Brahmos continues to develop parallel for the new generation (NG).

These developments reflect the commitment of India to strengthen strategic deterrence and secure its position in global missile technology environment.
