Starmer emerges from No10 for State Opening of Parliament as King prepares to address Lords and MPs – live updates
What can we expect from The King’s Speech?
The King’s Speech, the Labor government’s second speech, is expected to announce more than 35 bills.
The speech, which will set out the government’s legislative priorities for the next Parliamentary session, will include policies on immigration, green energy and reforms to special educational needs and disabled (Send) schools.
It will be read by the King before MPs and colleagues in the House of Lords and will include new legislation that will make it easier to take action against state-backed groups, such as banning Iran’s Revolutionary Guard.
This follows attacks on London’s Jewish community in recent months.
Regarding immigration, a legislation restricting the use of Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights, which guarantees the right to respect for private and family life, is expected, which is applied by some immigrants who do not have the right to visa or asylum.
There may be talk of new laws that would deny more people the right to appeal and establish an independent appeals body to hear claims currently considered by judges.
Private property reforms are also expected to feature in the conversation, as the government says it wants to ‘give people more control over how they live in their own homes’.
