The Ashes 2025: ‘England in battle to avoid worst Australia tour in modern times’

In the cold light of day, it could be argued that England had already beaten the teams they were supposed to beat.
The Gabba was England’s eighth defeat in their last 15 Tests. They lost 10 of 14 away games. There were no wins in the five-Test series against Australia or India. If it seems harsh to use a 4-1 defeat in India early last year as part of the decision, India recently lost 3-0 at home to New Zealand and 2-0 to South Africa.
The Bazball empire is now at risk of surrender. Before the series, it was thought that defeat in Australia would not necessarily require changes based on the style of performance.
Losing 3-2 after a decider in Sydney is very different to losing 3-2 after being 3-0 down. England can still win (yes, I know). They could also lose 5-0.
Stokes and McCullum are under contract until the end of their next home game, the Ashes, in 2027. Rob Key directs both. Richard Gould, chairman of the England and Wales Cricket Board, and chairman Richard Thompson will gauge public reaction, which is currently heated.
Beyond management, players’ careers and reputations are also at stake. One wonders what they talked about in the locker room.
Is there enough honesty and maturity to hold each other accountable? Is there room in Bazball groupthink to suggest that there might be another way of doing things?
Following the Gabba defeat, Stokes and McCullum’s comments were as strong as they have been in their more than three years in office. Having the two alphas publicly question the mentality of the England team is something that could come back to haunt them later in the tour.
“The dressing room I captain is no place for weak men,” Stokes said.
Rookies from England Lions dragged to the bar after defeat by Australia A England will have to rely on this group of players to salvage something from the tour.
England have not brought in a specialist back-up goalkeeper, so Smith is likely to remain in the line of fire. There is no spare specialist opener. Backup batsman Jacob Bethell took almost a year off, but at least he hit 71 for the Lions on Sunday.
Australia may look to Nathan Lyon’s 562 Test wickets when a spinner is needed for the third Test in Adelaide. England will have to gamble on Bashir, who was selected off the back of a clip on social media and does not currently have a county contract. His figures for the Lions were 0-115.
There is more than a week to go until the third Test, when England will have to justify their holiday on the Sunshine Coast.
When they return from their fun, they will be given the task of keeping the Ashes alive until Christmas.
If we fail, it would be hard to argue that this isn’t England’s worst Ashes tour in modern times.
