State’s third female governor to lead with kindness

A former nurse and health advocate has been appointed as Tasmania’s 30th governor, becoming the third woman to hold the role.

Caroline Wells will take over from Barbara Baker AC, who has been in the role since 2021, on June 17.

The Governor acts as the King’s representative and carries out constitutional duties, but in recent years he has played a more active role than ever in Tasmania’s political turmoil.

Ms Baker called for a snap election in 2025 after Tasmanian Premier Jeremy Rockliff called for a snap election after losing a motion of no confidence in parliament.

“This role is apolitical but I very much have my finger on the pulse,” Ms. Wells said on Wednesday.

Ms Wells began her working career as a registered nurse in 1985 and has held senior roles in the healthcare industry.

He was appointed chief executive of Diabetes Tasmania in 2005 and is currently chairman of the Royal Flying Doctor Service Tasmania.

Born and raised in Tasmania, Ms Wells becomes the state’s third female governor, after Ms Baker and her predecessor, Kate Warner AC.

“I’m a big advocate for women leading. It’s important to support women to succeed. It’s important to support everyone to succeed,” Ms. Wells said.

“One of the most important things for me will be connecting with communities. We have so many great people doing great things in Tasmania.”

Ms Wells, a mother of five daughters and grandmother of six, said she wanted to bring compassion and kindness to the role, as well as prompt business and investment opportunities.

Mr. Rockliff thanked Ms. Baker for her service and said the role was critical for the state.

“I know Ms. Wells will serve with compassionate and purposeful leadership underpinned by a strong commitment to all Tasmanians,” he said.

She plans to move into Government House with her partner, GP Rob Walters, and her 17-year-old cat.
