Steps initiated to implement District Plan projects

The District Planning Office (DPO) has initiated steps towards implementing a series of grassroots level development projects based on the District Plan, a comprehensive document that outlines guidelines for designing and implementing various development programmes. Officials said that as a first step, the DPO will bring together all departments in the region on Monday, June 8, 2026, to discuss and decide on projects that can be implemented in local institutions across the district.

The District Plan, a data-driven document of hundreds of pages, was compiled across districts towards the end of the tenure of the previous Left Democratic Front (LDF) government. The document was prepared by compiling the recommendations of 29 sub-committees in Ernakulam, comprising officials from various sectors. It was prepared as a draft after a series of meetings and development seminars held over approximately a year. The document was prepared as a road map for the next five years.

“Monday’s meeting is planned to discuss several projects that local bodies in the district have to undertake in the ongoing financial year. Relevant departments will guide local bodies on how to implement projects and collect funds,” a district official said.

The meeting will be attended by district panchayat president and District Collector, along with officials from various departments.

Ministries can either propose projects already included in the Regional Plan or propose new ones during discussions, the official said. The projects to be selected on priority could be from key sectors such as agriculture, SC/ST development and social justice, the official added.

Another official said that the current Regional Plan, which is the second document implemented across the state in 2017, will be implemented taking into account the shortcomings in the implementation of the previous plan. The main purpose of drafting the guidance document was to avoid duplication of projects planned by Government departments and local bodies.
