Strong 7.1-magnitude quake hits off eastern Malaysia: USGS

Kuala Lumpur: A powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of Sabah state on Malaysia’s Borneo island in the early hours of Monday, US seismologists said.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake’s epicenter was at a depth of 619.8 kilometers, less than 100 kilometers (62 miles) northeast of the coastal state’s capital, Kota Kinabalu.
The earthquake occurred at 12.57 am (1657 GMT).
