Student drowns in River Wye while on Duke of Edinburgh’s Award trip to Wales | Wales

A student drowned during a Duke of Edinburgh Award (DofE) trip in Wales, police said.

Emergency services were called to the River Wye in Glasbury, Powys, on Tuesday evening after reports of an 18-year-old man going into the water and not being found.

Dyfed-Powys police said his body was found after a search involving the mountain rescue team and the fire brigade.

A DofE spokesman confirmed the university student was on a trip as part of a DofE trip when he died.

He said: “We are deeply saddened to confirm that a teenager has drowned during a DofE expedition in Powys, Wales.

“Our thoughts are with the young man’s family and everyone involved. We will do everything we can to support them at this difficult time.”

“DofE is in close contact with the teenager’s school and the relevant authorities to understand how this tragic incident occurred. We offer our full support.”

A Dyfed-Powys police spokesman said a multi-agency operation was carried out on the River Wye following reports that an 18-year-old man had entered the water and could not be located.

The spokesman added: “Dyfed-Powys police, Mid and West Wales fire and rescue service, Mountain Rescue and the National Police Air Service have searched the area since the report was made at 6.30pm.

“Unfortunately, the body of a man has been found. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this difficult time.

“Emergency services remain in the area and ask members of the public to stay away while investigations continue.”

Last week, six people died in England after having difficulty swimming in the open sea.
