Ex-Liberal MP Daryl Maguire fights to avoid jail

A court asked the prosecutors to be imprisoned after the former deputy Daryl Maguire was found guilty of giving Icac misleading evidence.
Following a hearing in the early this year, the former liberal and Wagga Wagga deputy was found guilty by a peace judge for giving false or misleading evidence in a public investigation.
When Maguire runs a Sydney court next week, he will learn his destiny and argue that the legal team should be allowed to punish the community.
Maguire argued that he was not guilty, but in July 2018, Clare Farnan found that he had deliberately delivered the potential sale of a property in Sydney’s south -west Campsie and the purpose of paying the agreement to the Broker.
In 2016, ICAC launched an investigation at the Canterbury City Council under Dasha operation.
During the ICAC hearing, Maguire was questioned whether the former Assembly member Michael Hawatt would financially benefit if the site was sold to a Chinese developer.
The court had previously been told that Maguire had a relationship with the company gardens of the country with its “Chinese community members and travel to China”.
In 2016, ICAC began to legally touch Mr. Hawatt’s phone.
Earlier this year, Farnan said that Maguire was “open to help in defining possible development sites on behalf of the ‘Great Developer’ on behalf of the ‘Great Developer’.
During a call dated 9 May 2016, Maguire refers to a “MEGA Para” and a “customer”.
The royal prosecution argued that Maguire aims to benefit by introducing the owner of the property to the Chinese developer through Mr. Hawatt.
Maguire claimed that Country Garden was motivated by a friendship with a employee and did not expect financial benefit.
However, if Mrs. Farnan sells Harrison’s Site to Country Garden, Mr. Maguire is expected to take half of this sales commission of Mr. Hawatt.
His defense argued that some of his questions asked him at the ICAC hearing were uncertain and open to interpretation.
However, it was found that misleading evidence and Ms. Farnan rejected the possibility of giving false answers due to carelessness or misunderstanding.
Farnan, “I am satisfied … During the evidence, Mr. Maguire knew that he expected to share the commission with Mr. Hawatt, but he decided not to give this evidence before ICAC,” he said.
Maguire appeared in front of the local court on Friday, and Crown prosecutor Phil Hogan argued that elimin eliminating corruption ”was“ the will of the people ve and that he was an expectation of “an important full -time custody period for such crimes”.
Mr. Hogan, the court, people holding public crimes, “honesty and honesty will behave with the expectation of the expectation, he said.
The Court heard that Maguire has never received financial benefits, but Mr. Hogan argued that it did not reduce the seriousness of the accusation.

The case likened the case of the former Federal Court of Judgment Marcus Einfeld, who was thrown into imprisonment for two years for making a false statement under the oath and tried to deflect the course of justice.
However, Maguire’s lawyer Rebecca Gall argued that his accusations were not as serious as Einfeld’s.
The court said that Maguire gave a character reference to the former Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack that refers to strong “business ethics ..
Ms. Gall also drew attention to a report that considers Maguire as a low risk of risk because it claims that any sentence should be presented in the community.
When Maguire was sentenced to next Wednesday, a maximum of two years of imprisonment is faced.
Maguire resigned from the Liberal Party as a result of the ICAC investigation and then resigned from Parliament.
In 2021, ICAC found that Mr. Hawatt was “serious corruption”.
He was accused of giving false/misleading evidence in a public investigation and again in December related to the court.
A separate ICAC investigation revealed that Maguire had a secret relationship with Premier Gladys Berejiklian at the time.
In June 2023, ICAC found that Maguire and Mrs. Berejiklian were dealing with “serious corruption behaviors .. There was no accusation against Mrs. Berejiklian.
