Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau’s first public date was a ‘perfect’ performance designed to send a message to fans and exes, a top body language expert says.

After glitzy yacht photos pulled back the curtain on their romance earlier this month, the media-savvy couple were determined to keep it classy for their Paris date celebrating Perry’s 41st birthday at the weekend.

Body language expert Judi James told the Mail the couple performed a strange ‘ritual’ that resembled ‘a couple on their wedding day’.

‘Katy and Justin’s non-verbal displays here seem to identify them as a high-status, power couple who want to appear stylish and fairly demure,’ James said.

‘They both walked slowly and gracefully, with a similar air of politeness, and appeared in the doorway with an air of adopted privateness,’ said James.

‘Katy even accepted a long-stemmed rose in the exact shade of red as her simple but stunning dress from a waiting fan who seemed equally invested in the perfect choreography,’ she added.

But fans weren’t the only ones the new couple performed with; James stated that they sent a very intentional message to their exes.

James said Perry, who officially split from ex-fiancé Orlando Bloom less than a month ago, seemed to indicate that she “found what she was looking for.”

James added that the singer’s body language showed that she had found a man with global power and connections who could open up a whole new world for Katy outside of show business.

Meanwhile, 53-year-old Trudeau, who separated from his wife Sophie Grégoire Trudeau in 2023 after 18 years of marriage, took one last look at the cameras after Katy got into the car.

His closed-lipped, borderline smug smile showed that he was not only quietly enjoying the attention, but also proud to flaunt their relationship publicly.

As for who calls the shots in the relationship, James said: ‘Justin’s gentlemanly demeanor is often about leading, directing and even providing some reassurance, which makes him come off as a bit dominant.’

James stated that the former Canadian Prime Minister also gave his partner a comforting sign of his presence during the trip.

“We can see Katy look at Justin as they reach the threshold, as if to say, ‘Here we go,’ and we can also see Justin grab Katy’s hand, pulling the buckle towards his own body, as if giving a final note of trust and commitment,” he told the Mail.

Trudeau even managed to instill some affection as he guided Perry toward their waiting car.

“Justin Trudeau is like a charm filter; he effortlessly oozes everything and his hand gestures here are impeccable and cool as he gently guides Katy into their car with a series of very soft and affectionate touches,” James continued.

James said the couple also displayed an ‘effortless-looking synchronicity’ that showed their compatibility.

‘In this brief but moving glimpse, the couple appear to have the kind of seemingly effortless synchronicity that implies a meeting of minds as well as bodies. ‘This look is unashamedly romantic, from the classic red dress and rose color to the matching upturned, round-cheek smiles they both sport.’

Perry and Trudeau first sparked dating rumors in July when they were spotted on a dinner date in Montreal.

Earlier this month, the Daily Mail published exclusive photos of the former politician and artist getting very cozy on a yacht.

Katy and Orlando’s representatives told the Daily Mail: ‘Orlando and Katy have been transitioning their relationship over the last few months to focus on co-parenting.

‘They will continue to be seen together as a family because their shared priority is and always will be to raise their daughter with love, stability and mutual respect.’

“Katy and Orlando have split but are amicable,” a source told Us Weekly over the summer, adding that the split wasn’t “controversial.”

The Woman’s World singer was previously married to Russell Brand from 2010 to 2012.

Justin announced his separation from Sophie Grégoire Trudeau in 2023 after 18 years of marriage. The former couple has three children.

He was prime minister of Canada from 2015 to March 2025.
