Sungjae Im hits truly bizarre bunker shot that ricochets off grandstand only to end up back at his feet
Every golf shot is unique, but some are more unique than others. Just ask Sungjae Im.
During Saturday’s event at the Truist Championship, the two-time PGA Tour winner found himself in the greenside bunker on the par-5 15th hole. While the bunker shot may seem like a simple shot with plenty of green space to work with, it captures the equator of the golf ball and airmails it onto the putting surface.
What happened next was both crazy and a little unfortunate.

Im’s ball eventually hit the stands at the back of the green, and although at first glance it looked like the golf ball would stay on the green and have a great opportunity, it eventually bounced back into the bunker where he hit his third shot.

Both myself and playmate Tommy Fleetwood looked understandably stunned by what they had just witnessed.
I proceeded to hit the next bunker shot to 15 feet, but missed the par putt and walked away with a six-bogey bogey on the hole.

The stands surrounding the course at PGA Tour events have come under criticism over the years for providing support to players. More often than not, when a player’s golf ball hits the stands, it usually saves them from disaster, often resulting in relief from structure or luckily a bounce closer to the hitting surface.

I started the third round of Saturday’s signature event at the top of the leaderboard, but found myself four shots behind leader Alex Fitzpatrick heading into Sunday’s final round.
Fitzpatrick earned his PGA Tour card in April after he and his brother Matthew Fitzpatrick won the Zurich Classic team event in dramatic fashion.
