Super Bowl champion talks about difficult part of the college-to-NFL transition

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Super Bowl champion Steve Beuerlein revealed what part of the transition from college football to the NFL isn’t talked about enough.

Beuerlein, 61, said players anticipate the physical aspect of the game when they enter the NFL, but they don’t anticipate everything that comes mentally.

“I think a lot of players are anticipating the physical aspect of it. We understand that everything happens a lot faster. The guys are a lot stronger. The mistakes are a lot less. The margin for error is a lot less,” Beuerlein told Fox News Digital in a recent interview.

“Every mistake is magnified. I think the players understand that. But at this level I don’t think it’s possible for them to understand the complexity of the game and the time you spend preparing yourself every week.”

Beuerlein said players need to make strong decisions and develop strong habits off the field to endure the grind.

“It’s a long season, and I know for college football players the season is longer now than ever before, but the intensity and magnitude of every game and the pressure on you to perform and produce at a high level every week is so much greater at the NFL level,” Beuerlein said.

“And of course, as you get a little older, the toll that that takes on your body is very different. So you have to get into good habits for yourself in terms of decisions, your life decisions outside of the football field, how you take care of yourself, your diet, your nutrition, your exercise routine.”

Rookies would be wise to heed the advice of Beuerlein, who played 14 seasons in the NFL.
