Superman takes aim at MAGA cult and saves the day for progressive cinema

James Gunn’s brave new restart, reminiscent of Superman’s still important action, heart and a sharp political advantage. Dijital Editoran Dan Jensen is going up and far with his new Superman.

Superhero fatigue is real. The audience was tired after years of curved multiperes, inflated running times and a constantly rotating spandex and CGI cycle. The species that once excited us was tiring for many.

For this reason SupermanAuthor/director James GunnBesur’s new restart came with more than more expectations – carried the weight of salvation. Could this be a movie to revive Spark?

The answer is happy yes. Grimely, unrelated, Unapolognically yes.

The love of comics is not only in the skin depth, but in the hands of Gunn, which is practically ink stained. Superman It’s not just a return to the uniform, it’s a revelation. He understands something that too many new superheroes forgot: these stories work in the best way not only in the show, but in the soul. Gunn’s film nails the tone on foot on a sensitive line between serious and modern, legendary and fun. And for the first time in decades, Superman himself seems to be in good hands.

Every previous cinematic incarnation of Steel Man had flaws, such as tonal incompatibility, incorrectly or just miss the character of the character. But the day does not miss. HE burn Superman. This is not a thoughtful god who leaves humanity or an incompetent Christ figure. This superman because it should always be: hopeful, principled, polite, but not naive. Even if people seem determined to prove him wrong, he is a hero who believes in people.

Visually, the film is striking. Cinematography is sharp and vivid, capturing both the magnificence of the metropolis and the sincerity of the equality of Smallville. Action sequences are beautifully subjected to choreography, but never excessively – each fist, every explosion, every rising moment, serves instead of distracting the story. Visual effects are not breathtaking, but Gunn knows when the camera will linger to let a quiet scene talk louder higher than thousands of collapsed building.

The score deserves its own paragraph. Composer John Murphy And David Fleming Create something in love here, woven the emotional depth and heroic swelling, practically as much as it will become your own character. And yes, they use it John WilliamsIconic themes and they use perfectly. It brings tears to the eyes of fans who are waiting to hear again in a way that has been won for years as a respectful bridge between the past and present, not as a head shaking.

In terms of performance, players are delivered to the board. He played by the new superman David CorenswetA revelation – charismatic, vulnerable and command at once. He feels both a stranger and deep people, which is not an easy success. Supporting characters from a sharply written Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahanto a Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) threat is not based on the bomb but boiling intelligence. Even the smallest roles are used for care and purpose.

And a review is not completed without mentioning Superdog Krypto, which is intensively involved in the marketing of the film. Gunn’s creation of a purely CGI, based on one of his own dogs, every scene in which Krypto is located is funny funny without moving away from the main action. Despite his approach, he never steals the show. A very fun character and the best child around.

But what does it really set Superman It is its separate heart. This is a movie that is something to say – and he says clearly. Under the cloak and laser eyes, there is a very human story about compassion, identity and belonging. Gunn uses Superman’s foreign status to shed light on the bad state of immigrants and points to the persecution of immigration policies. A strong thematic-output that lost an unexpected weight to the film.

And it doesn’t end here. Gunn also aims at social media echo rooms, which have become such a toxic fixture of modern discourse. With a smart and funny metaphor, film keyboards, angry, screaming monkeys – the keyboards depicting mature, reactionary and incapable of nuance. This is a bold movement and a movement that will undoubtedly throw some feathers. But Gunn was never afraid to swing.

Nevertheless, for all the subtitle and sacrifice, Superman He never forgets to be fun. It is funny when it should be, it moves when counted and constantly fun from start to finish. It makes you feel like a movie that someone makes lovers Superman – not as a brand or franchise, as a symbol. And at a time when symbols are increasingly empty, this sincerity is both refreshing and radical.

There has been a reason why this character has been folded for about a century. And now, finally, after many wrong steps and the wrong start, we have a Superman film that fits his legacy. Not only on tights and flights, but spiritually. James Gunn did something heroic – he reminded us why we believe a man could fly.
