Superyachts destroyed in million-dollar marina blaze

Three luxury yachts were destroyed and another was severely damaged after a major fire broke out in a marina.

About 40 firefighters attended the Spit Marina at Mosman on Sydney Harbor early on Friday, where it took more than two hours to extinguish the blaze.

Emergency services were first called at around 3.30am after one ship was on fire before the flames spread to three other ships.

While four people were evacuated from the first yacht that caught fire, a woman affected by the smoke was treated by paramedics and taken to hospital in stable condition.

NSW Fire and Rescue Inspector Adam Dewberry said that all three destroyed superyachts sank and attention was turned to controlling hazardous materials spilled as a result of the fire.

“We have a fourth yacht that has sustained significant damage and needs to be assessed and is still afloat,” he said.

“We have placed barriers around the debris field where the ships sank to contain many materials, including oils and fuels from these boats.”

NSW Police said their initial investigation revealed the fire was not being treated as suspicious.

The NSW Ports Authority also attended the fire, including one of its boats.

Located in the affluent port suburb of Mosman, Spit Marina describes itself as “located in one of Sydney Harbour’s most prestigious boating precincts”.
