‘I don’t see how anybody can be discouraged who is alive right now’

The future looks bright, at least according to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.

Luck In his speech at Italian Technology Week 2025, Bezos reportedly shared his vision for the future, which includes living in space and no commute.

Bezos’ predictions include the expectation that robots will commute to work by 2045. But more important than that is his prediction that millions of people will enjoy life in space in the next decade or two.

Bezos also shared his disbelief with those who predict the collapse of civilization due to artificial intelligence and technological advances. But AI is already responsible for people losing their jobs, and the data centers required to power the technology consume huge amounts of natural resources. Considering these factors, it is easy to see how humans can predict disaster and catastrophe with the continued use of artificial intelligence.

The potential benefits of allowing a machine to synthesize vast amounts of data and draw conclusions or recommendations in minutes are also clear; In some cases, it could even help solve pollution and power problems, although we have yet to see such a solution that offsets the power usage associated with millions of lesser AI uses per day.

The Amazon founder isn’t the only billionaire looking forward to a future in space. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman predicts that in just a decade, college graduates will be working off-planet on exciting (and extremely well-paying) projects, while Elon Musk maintains his belief that humans will be living on Mars as soon as 2028.

But not all the ultra-rich believe in space travel. Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates told James Corden that he believes humanity should prioritize repairing our current planet rather than planning ventures into space.

“Space? We have a lot to do here on Earth,” he said.

According to Fortune, Gates was “undecided about how far we should push technology.”

While Gates said in a speech: report He said with Jimmy Fallon that artificial intelligence and machines could usher in a new era where people only have to work a few days a week and machines do the rest. He also once declared that if he came across a time traveler, he would interrogate them about the future of humanity under artificial intelligence.

From Gates’ perspective, it’s also unclear how the tech companies and major corporations responsible for these AI innovations will plan to help these productivity gains benefit individual members of society who don’t work at their companies, allowing them to work less without a pay cut, as Gates notes.

Pete Buttigieg is one of the few politicians speaking out about the need for government involvement to ensure that AI leads to a more utopian society rather than a more dystopian society. saying There must be “AI dividends” that will distribute the wealth of “AI-created value.”

“I think this means giving everyone a share of the overall value created by technologies that, again, are based on technologies that taxpayers paid for in the ’60s in the first place,” said Buttigieg, the former US Secretary of Transportation. “So why shouldn’t we all get a cut? Instead of everything going to these little handful of super, super rich people who are consolidating their power, like mega mega billionaires, right? We should have a tax policy that does that.”

But Bezos remains optimistic. As he said in Italy, “I don’t understand how anyone who is alive now can be discouraged.”
