Virginia road rage incident turns deadly with mass stabbing on I-495

At least two people were killed Sunday in Virginia when a highway “road rage incident” reportedly turned into a violent mass stabbing, authorities said.

The shooting occurred on I-495 southbound near the Little River Turnpike in Annandale, Fairfax County, about 30 minutes from Washington, D.C.

Authorities said one of the four stabbing victims and a dog died in the incident. The suspect died when the police returned fire.

Authorities stated that the attack did not appear to be related to terrorism.

“A Virginia State Police officer was called to the scene of a reported road rage incident at approximately 1:17 p.m.,” Virginia state police said.

“The stabbings occurred before or while police responded,” authorities added in a statement to Fox News Digital.

It was reported that the police who intervened in the incident found a male suspect with a knife. It was reported that during the conflict, the police shot the suspect in self-defense. Officials added that the soldier who intervened was not harmed.

State police identified the deceased victim as a 39-year-old woman who died from her injuries. The dog involved in the incident was also fatally stabbed.

The incident led to the closure of the highway following reports of heavy police presence.

“Southbound I-495 and 495 Express Lines past Gallows Road are closed due to a major incident,” the Virginia Department of Transportation’s Northern Virginia office said. he said, adding that the lanes were “blocked due to police activity.”

The investigation into the accident continues.

The Fairfax County Police Department told Fox News Digital it was assisting state police troops.
