Switzerland advanced to the last 16 by defeating Algeria 2-0 in Vancouver today.

A goal in each half was enough for them to complete their match against the winner of Ghana and Colombia, scheduled for Saturday AEST.

Algeria threatened but struggled to create meaningful scoring chances, while Switzerland could well have scored a third or even fourth goal.

Captain Granit Xhaka made his 150th appearance and the former Arsenal playmaker was at the center of the action throughout the game.

They pose a serious threat in the next round and beyond.
