Sydney e-bike rider hospitalised after allegedly fleeing from police

A man who allegedly escaped from the police on an e-bike is fighting for his life after having an accident.
The accident happened in the southwestern suburb of Sadleir on Saturday night.
Police said the driver was not wearing a helmet and was in a critical condition at a hospital in Sydney.
Given the man’s injuries, the police’s internal professional standards command and the state government’s Law Enforcement Commission will investigate the incident.
A police spokesman said that at around 11pm police attempted to stop a man riding an e-bike without a helmet on Bungulla Street in Sadleir.
“Upon sighting the police, the driver allegedly continued to drive away from the police before crashing into a pole,” the spokesman said.
“A 39-year-old man was treated at the scene for serious injuries before being taken to Liverpool Hospital in a critical condition.
“A crime scene has been established and a critical incident team from Auburn Police Area Command will investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.”
On Monday the NSW government announced a crackdown on high-powered e-bikes with power outputs more similar to motorcycles.
NSW laws limit the top speed of e-bikes to 25 km/h. The newly announced crackdown also included arming police with mobile units that measure the engine power of e-bikes.
