T.N. govt. permits increased intake in arts and science colleges

The Tamil Nadu government has allowed increased student admission in government, aided and private Arts and Science colleges in the state.
The Government Order (GO) issued on Thursday stated that government Arts and Science colleges will be allowed to admit 20 per cent more students in high-demand courses in the academic year 2026-27. Increased intake for science courses will be subject to good laboratory facilities in the respective institutions.
Similarly, government-aided colleges may admit 15 percent additional students into Arts and Science courses that are in high demand and have appropriate laboratory facilities in the case of Science courses. However, 10 per cent additional intake will be allowed for self-sustaining courses run by aided colleges.
The additional intake allowed for self-financing Arts and Sciences colleges was 10 per cent.
GO announced that the increase will be based on the original intake approved by the university to which the institutions are affiliated. Institutions are also required to obtain the approval of the relevant universities before accepting additional students. However, due to increased student recruitment, institutions were prohibited from requesting sanctions for additional positions.
GO stated that in the academic year 2025-26, the government has given similar permission for additional student admission in government-aided and self-financing Arts and Science colleges.
