The Tamil Nadu government has taken all necessary steps to secure its due share of water from inter-state rivers, according to the Governor’s customary speech, which was admittedly read in the Assembly on Tuesday. (The Governor refused to read the prepared speech and left the hall. Later, a resolution was passed in the Parliament that the speech prepared by the State government and sent to him would be deemed to have been read by him in the Parliament.)
The statement said, “We will never compromise on our legitimate water sharing.” The address said that since this government took office, the Mettur dam has been opened for irrigation every year as per schedule and waste removal works have been carried out in the last four years at a cost of 459 million rupees.
“These measures ensured that water reached the tail ends, thus increasing agricultural production and improving farmers’ lives.”
In Tamil Nadu, 121 check dams and 101 anaicuts have been constructed in the last five years at an estimated cost of ₹ 2,086 crore. Additionally, 1,045 water sources have been renewed so far within the scope of the Athikadavu-Avinashi project. Tamirabharani-Karumeniyar-Nambiyar project has been completed and a cumulative amount of 9.38 TMC of water has been supplied from Thamirabarani river to various villages in Thisayanvilai and Sathankulam districts. Address added that thanks to this project, irrigation facilities were expanded to an additional 56,933 decares of land.
