King to host German president in third state visit of the year

Next month, the king will host the first official visit by a German president in 27 years.

President Frank-Walter Steinmeier will be welcomed by Charles and the Queen at Windsor Castle from 3 December to 5 December.

This marks an unusually busy year for the monarch; because this will be the third official visit hosted by the King, who also welcomed French President Emmanuel Macron in July.

Charles is still undergoing cancer treatment, but he never misses a busy schedule.

The 76-year-old monarch will travel to Italy later this month for an official visit to the Vatican to meet the Pope.

The King went to Germany with Camilla in 2023 for the first official visit since his accession to the throne.

He received a standing ovation when he made the first speech by a British monarch during a session of the Bundestag federal parliament and told a packed room that he wanted to “renew the promise of friendship between our nations”.

President Steinmeier, who attended the coronation of the King and Queen two years ago, will be accompanied by his wife, former judge Elke Budenbender.

More details of the visit will be announced in due course, but it will include a ceremonial welcome, a large state banquet in the castle’s St George’s Hall and talks with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.

Last month, the King hosted a historic second state visit for US President Donald Trump, which included a lavish state banquet.

President Trump is expected to invite the King to the White House for the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence next July.
