Hopkins reveals mysterious voice led to his decades of sobriety journey

Sir Anthony Hopkins gets candid about his journey to sobriety and how the mysterious voice in his head led him to quit drinking. It’s a voice he believes is God.

The 87-year-old Oscar-winning actor talked about his faith in an extensive interview. New York Times. This comes ahead of his memoir, “We Did Good, Kid,” which is scheduled to be published next month.

In the interview, Hopkins recalled driving drunk in California on December 29, 1975. He said he didn’t care if he died or not. Hopkins said he suddenly came to his senses because of the potential to harm another person and said he called his former manager to ask for help.

He described what happened next as “an epiphany.”

“Some deep, powerful thought or voice from within spoke to me and said, ‘It’s all over. You can start living now. And it was all for a purpose, so don’t forget a moment of it,'” Hopkins told the Times.

The actor won two Academy Awards and appeared in dozens more films. He said he stayed sober for almost fifty years after this voice, which he said came from “inside” him.

“The vocals were masculine and sensible, like a radio voice. My desire to drink was taken away from me or left,” said Hopkins, known for his roles in films such as “The Silence of the Lambs” and “The Elephant Man.”

He admitted that this was a phenomenon that he believed was explained by faith.

“I don’t have any theory other than divinity or the power, life force or whatever it is that we all have within us that creates us from birth. I believe it’s a consciousness,” he said.

He recalled another defining moment, when he was driving through Los Angeles in the late 1970s and suddenly felt compelled to stop in front of a Catholic church. He went to church and told a young priest that he had found God.

Hopkins said both experiences convinced him that God is something deeply personal and real.

“What happened that morning – when that voice said, ‘It’s over. You can start living now and it was all for a purpose’ – I knew it was a force far beyond my understanding,” he said.

“Not up there in the clouds, but here. I chose to call him God. I didn’t know what else to call him. Short word, ‘God’. Easy to write.”
