India and the United States have increased their interaction on issues related to economic security in recent years. Critical minerals emerged as the central element of these discussions. Both countries see these as vital to clean energy goals and long-term industrial growth.
The U.S. State Department said Feb. 4 that the United States would welcome delegations that would advance collective efforts to strengthen and diversify critical mineral supply chains.
“This historic meeting will accelerate cooperation to secure these critical components that are vital to technological innovation, economic strength and national security,” the State Department said.
Jaishankar’s Washington meetings are part of regular high-level contacts between New Delhi and Washington. The two sides hold frequent talks on diplomacy, trade, technology and security issues.
In recent years, critical minerals have gained importance as countries expand renewable energy and advanced manufacturing. They are widely used in clean energy systems, batteries and other strategic sectors, and demand is increasing worldwide.
