UP 77 series based on gangster Vikas Dubey
The Delhi High Court has issued notice seeking to ban the new web series titled UP 77, which is reportedly based on the life of gangster Vikas Dubey. The petition was submitted ahead of the series’ scheduled air date of December 25, 2025. The defense claims that the series concerns sensitive events that are still under legal and public scrutiny.
The matter was taken up by Justice Sachin Datta, who issued a notice to the Union government and the makers of the web series. The issue will be discussed on Wednesday. The petition was filed by Vikas Dubey’s widow Richa under Article 226 of the Constitution. He is represented by lawyer Azra Khan. The petitioner asked the court to stay the certification, broadcast, broadcast, promotion and exhibition of UP 77, which will be released on Waves OTT on December 25.
It is alleged in the defense that no written, oral or implied consent was sought or obtained from the petitioner for the depiction of identifiable characters, names, relationships, events and particular events associated with him and his family. It is alleged that the series sensationalized and fictionalized very private aspects of his life, including the events in his marital home and the events following his wife’s death, resulting in a serious violation of his private life, honor and reputation, which are protected under Article 21 of the Constitution.
The petition also states that the show’s producers promote the series as “based on true events,” “inspired by true events,” and a “real-life story.” According to the petitioner, reference was made to promotional clips and social media posts uploaded on the OTT platform’s official Instagram account which depicted her deceased husband, his alleged activities and death as well as her marital relationship, family life and private interactions clearly without permission.
Vikas Dubey was shot dead by the Uttar Pradesh Police in 2020 during an encounter in which he allegedly tried to escape from custody. There were more than 60 criminal cases against him. He was linked to the murder of a government minister and was also the prime accused in a separate case involving the killing of eight police officers during an arrest attempt. (With inputs from ANI)
