James Ransone, US actor known for The Wire, dies aged 46 | US news
American actor James Ransone, known for his work in 12 episodes of The Wire, died in Los Angeles.
Ransone, 46, died by suicide on Friday, according to a Los Angeles medical examiner.
Ransone starred as the longshoreman turned petty criminal Chester “Ziggy” Sobotka in the second season of David Simon’s critically acclaimed Baltimore crime drama The Wire. She later starred opposite Alexander Skarsgård in Generation Kill, also directed by Simon.
In Generation Kill, Ransone portrayed real-life sailor Captain Josh Ray Person in all seven episodes of the HBO show.
Ransone more recently appeared in It Chapter Two as the fictional character Eddie Kaspbrak.
News of his death prompted condolences on social media from fans of the various productions he participated in. One praise in particular praised how his work on It Chapter Two stood out in a cast that included Bill Hader, Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy, and Skarsgård’s brother Bill, who plays the antagonist Pennywise.
Among those to discuss was Ransone’s actor friend François Arnaud, a leading actor in Heated Rivalry, available on the HBO Max platform.
“RIP James Ransone,” Arnaud wrote on Instagram on Sunday. “He is a unique player who I am constantly impressed and inspired by.”
Ransone was born in Baltimore in 1979. From 1993 to 1997 he attended the Carver Center for Art and Technology in Towson, Maryland. He got his break by starring in the 2002 teen drama Ken Park before landing his role in The Wire a year later.
Ransone shared that she was sexually harassed in 2021 by a former teacher working in Maryland public schools. Baltimore Sun reported. He wrote on Instagram that the abuse was a factor in the alcohol and heroin addiction he would later struggle with.
